Android O to Cut Reboot Time in Half, Significantly Improve App Performance.

Although the time to reboot your smartphone is likely not a major concern for most users, rebooting is one of the more common tasks for users on our forums thanks to the myriad of modifications that we add that require you to reboot your phone. Rebooting your phone can be quite slow, however, but Google wants to change that in Android O. The company announced that the system will reboot twice as fast as compared to Android 7.0 Nougat.

Google didn’t shed any light on what has been changed to make the boot process faster. We can only hope that it will be explained more during this year’s I/O. But that’s not all that the company announced that has us excited.

Google states that application performance should be significantly improved with Android O. Google claims that applications will function twice as fast, citing an example of where a standard workflow benchmark in Google Sheets was completed twice as fast under Android O.

Again, no information at the keynote was given about how they achieved these optimizations. These details will likely be explained in subsequent sessions at the event. We hope that this boost will affect all applications and not only under specific conditions.

Besides enhanced reboot times being useful for all custom ROM flashers, this should also help with users taking an OTA update. Google’s seamless update structure with the Google Pixel and Pixel XL devices improves the time it takes to handle an OTA update, but the device still needs to be rebooted so the active partition can be swapped.
